Rutger de Vries werd geïnspireerd door de slijtage van de lak op de banken in de New Yorkse metrostations. Zijn concept is gebaseerd op de kindertekening die hij vroeger maakte met wasco en een laagje zwarte verf eroverheen. Door de zwarte verf weg te krassen ontstond er een kleurrijke tekening. Het bijzondere aan de bank is dan ook dat de zwarte toplaag door het gebruik langzaam maar zeker zal slijten waardoor de onderliggende kleurpatronen zich zullen onthullen. Scratch Bench werd gepresenteerd tijdens OBJECT 2021 in Rotterdam.
